World order, ”rogue nations” and threat of authoritarianism

The world order is in danger! In 2022, Russia launched its shocking war of aggression in Ukraine and Israel launched its genocide in Gaza. There are a number of countries in the world that do not condemn these terrible wars in any way: India, Iran, China, Argentina… to name a few. Trump’s USA does not really care either. These countries do this consciously, because they are either worried about their own interests or even a direct bloc of dictators, frightened by the spread of democracy and the dictators fearing for their power.

There is a bloc of “rogue nations” in the world, united by authoritarian rule. They have a common interest in opposing globalization, world peace, environmentalism, cooperation, solidarity, the UN, the EU and the rules-based world that have been part of the new world order. Fukuyama’s idea that the world had reached the “end of history” when the Soviet Union collapsed and the new global world order began was too optimistic.

The danger is that we are returning to the old world, a warlike world, where dictators riot and do whatever they want, or there may be even worse, a new dystopian and fascist world, ruled authoritarianally, the weakening of the UN and the rule base and cooperation. Russia and the BRICS countries, as well as many other countries, such as Israel, see it as an advantage that cooperation and rules do not prevent dictators and authoritarian governments from acting. One major reason for Russia’s aggressive war is also Europe’s development towards a green transition and the use of ecological energy, which has led to a decrease in Russia’s oil and natural gas consumption. Putin and the oligarchs get their money from oil and natural gas. The USA has become fascist, one major reason is the propaganda spread by Russia online, this is why Trump won the election. Trump will probably not leave power at the end of his second term. The EU is one of the last bastions of democracy. Increasing EU cooperation towards a federal state is desirable.

The UN Sustainable Development Agenda 2030’s key goal 17 “global cooperation” is at risk. The world cannot afford for the UN goals to fall short. They will almost certainly not be achieved by 2030 due to the changed world situation. Perhaps we can still achieve them in the 2030s. This requires an even greater effort towards a sustainable, cooperative and rules-based world.

  1. As an Indigenous person I both agree that the world seems to be regressing and know all too well the genocide of Native peoples never stopped. In some ways, as frightening as the present moment is, it at least seems a lot more truthful.
