Life exists in a dynamic balance between entropy and order. Both are necessary, but in different ways:
- Entropy – The engine of life
Entropy is used as words ”disorder” or ”messiness”, but in physics it is more precisely the dispersion of energy. The increase in entropy creates energy flows, that make life possible:
Solar energy: The sun creates gradients that make possible chemical reactions and weather phenomena.
Atmospheric and ocean circulation: Wind, rain and ocean currents distribute energy and nutrients in different ways.
Chemical Imbalance: Life’s use of redox reactions and molecular gradients to power its metabolism.
Without entropy, there would be no movement, no metabolism, and no growth—life literally rides the waves of entropy growth.
- Order – The Creation of Information
Order is the local reduction of entropy through information:
Information is created by interaction: Systems are built when there is interaction between forces or the exchange of matter, energy, or signals.
Biological Order: DNA stores information for the construction of cells, tissues, and organisms.
Intelligence: At the highest level, information organizes itself into consciousness, capable of learning, adapting, and reflecting.
Thus, life acts as a bridge between entropy and information, directing energy flows to create structural complexity.
- Life as a dissipative structure
Life can be used as a dissipative structure (Ilya Prigogine): it consumes free energy to maintain local order while the overall entropy of the universe increases. But not all dissipative systems are life.
Examples:
A hurricane forms a highly ordered vortex while releasing heat to the environment.
Cells maintain order and function by metabolizing energy and releasing heat as a byproduct.
This dual role makes life a paradox and a marvel of thermodynamics: it builds order locally while achieving the universe’s tendency toward disorder.
- Consciousness – The culmination of information
Consciousness is information formed in system that alternates with itself. Entropy provides energy and variation. Life captures this variation in a system.
Consciousness arises when systems interact with themselves recursively. In other words, intelligence is a way of observing the universe itself.
Summary:
Life is a process in which entropy enables the creation of information, and information local order – culminating in intelligent consciousness.

The image shows the surface of the planet Jupiter, which very well depicts extreme chaos. There is a balance between the entropy of chaos and order that creates star systems, life and diverse nature.
